●前面讲过“take”一词，基本含义为“拿，握，抱，抓”。“hold”则表示这些动作的延续，意为“拿着，握住，抱着，抓住”。比如，牵手是“take one’s hand”，握着则为“hold one’s hand”。可以用动作持续的时间长短区分这两个词。由此可见，hold表达一种持久力。比如，这根绳子能用更长时间“The rope will hold much longer.”。它还可以表达客观物体的支撑力，比如那树枝撑得住我“The branch will hold me.”。
●如果用到人的身上，hold则表示拥有或占有。比如，拥有庞大地产“hold a large estate”。警察拘留嫌疑犯也用“hold”。遇事不慌沉住气用“hold”。控制得过头叫“压抑”，还可以用“hold”来表示。比如，压抑住怒气“hold one’s anger”。如果你有本事把大家都“压制住了”，没人想离开，这叫吸引。比如，吸引了观众的注意“hold the audience”。
●在生活中，有的人做事不达目的不罢休，称为执著，当然同样可以称为顽固不化。不管怎样，都可以用“hold to”表达。比如，执著于梦想“hold to dreams”。
●其实，最常用到的情境是在打电话时请对方稍等片刻“hold on”。如果是面对面讲话，需要对方稍等一下，只用“hold”就行了。
