打破常规
●说到“break”，不得不提到曾经热播的美国电视剧《Prison Break》（《越狱》）。这个剧名最恰当地展现了“break”的主要含义：打破，突破。越狱当然是件大事，然而生活中的小事也经常用这个词表达。比如：弄坏玩具“break the toy”，打破镜子“break the mirror”，折断树枝“break branches”，擦破皮肤“break the skin”等。它还可以表示冲破和闯入的意思。如：突破敌人阵线“break through the enemy lines”，小偷闯入商店“break into the shop”。
●其实，还有更深一层意思的表达。开车违反了交通规则“break the traffic rules”；生意场上不赔不赚叫“break even”；最怕签了合同却没有按时履行，违背了与别人的承诺“break one’s promise”，难怪对方要翻脸“break up”。由于这个合同没完成，导致信誉受损，招致其他合作伙伴纷纷中断合同“break off”，使公司陷入更大困境，无法自拔，最终破产了“break”。此时，当事人最不愿意把这样的坏消息告诉家人“break the news to his family”。父母可能会因此而病倒“break down”，妻子的第一反应可能是号啕大哭“break into tears”，随后狠下心来离婚“break up”，如果真是这样的话，当事人会不会崩溃“break down”呢？
