●set与put的基本含义很相近，均为“放置”。比如，放下“set down”，靠墙放着“set against a wall”。不同的是，set为艺术家所青睐。例如作家构思小说，需要设置故事发生的场景“set the book in Beijing”（以北京为小说的背景）。电影导演拍戏设置布景也用这个词。对于每个人来说，结婚肯定是人生中的大事，所以选定婚礼的日期“set the wedding day”必定是一件大费脑筋的事情。
●人往往过于关注自己，忘记了大自然的变化。太阳每天从东边升起“rise in the east”，西边落下“set in the west”，这才是主宰一切的永恒规律。古代的人类正是随着太阳升起而出发开始一天的劳作“set off for work”。经历四季的轮转，风霜雨雪的变化，人类懂得了未雨绸缪的道理，所以收获的粮食要留下一部分，以供饥荒之用，延续到现代，就是把挣来的钱留下一部分存到银行里，我们可以用“set aside”表达。
